Discover Las Vegas: Guide to the best places to visit tips for a successful stay and restaurants to visit

*This text was translated from the original version in French using Google translate in parts

For spring break 2024, we visited the “Entertainment Capital of the World”, Las Vegas with our 12-year-old child. It may not be the ideal city with a child, you might say, but our little girl had a lot of fun! Whether you are traveling with adults or children, Las Vegas is worth the detour!

In this article you will find a list of the places we visited and some practical tips to make your Las Vegas vacation successful.

The Strip

The Strip is the iconic icon of Las Vegas. A 6.8 kilometer of world-famous casinos, luxurious hotels, gourmet restaurants and breathtaking shows. For a total immersion in the essence of Las Vegas, a walk along the Strip is a must. If you don't make many stops like us, you'll need a good two full days to visit all the hotel lobbies and magnificent gardens. Everything is impressive! Obviously, you will be captivated by the countless number of casinos, but you will also be impressed by the investment in architecture that is made by each of the hotels on this artery. You will be amazed!

Fremont Street Experience: A Dive into Las Vegas History

A place that is absolutely worth the detour. Fremont Street will offer you an extraordinary experience. This iconic street in Las Vegas is home to the oldest casinos. Its luminous roof will transport you to an extraordinary atmosphere. You will also find plenty of street performances, local artisans and retro shops. If you have children with you, be sure to visit the Downtown Container Park. It cost us $20 by taxi to get to Freemont Street from the Planet Hollywood hotel.

The Cirque du Soleil show O at the Bellagio

Who says Las Vegas, says spectacle. We attended the fabulous show O by Cirque du Soleil. With the poor exchange rate currently in Canada, the show cost us $838 Canadian for 3 people. We had good seats. Do we regret? NO! This experience was undoubtedly the eye-opening moment of our trip. The universe into which Cirque du Soleil transports us is incredible. It is for us, a memory that will remain forever engraved in our memories.

Bellagio Hotel & Casino: The fountain show and the new lobby

Who would have thought that a fountain could give rise to such a grandiose spectacle? Don't miss out on sitting in front of the Bellagio fountain at the end of the evening to admire the show... or several if you wish! From 7:30 p.m., every 15 minutes, you will be entitled to a show from the water fountains. We were also among the first to discover the new Bellagio lobby. In addition to the majestic Casino, the Bellagio has invested in a hall which is, in our opinion, the grandest of all. Don't go to the Bellagio if you're in Las Vegas, it's a horrible waste!

The Big Apple Coaster - New York New York Hotel and Casino

We see this roller coaster from almost everywhere on the Strip. But is it really worth it? Certainly! It cost us $70 Canadian for 2 people. It's definitely not cheap, but was it worth it? Certainly! The view we have as the wagon climbs to the top of the ride rail is breathtaking. Although too short in duration in my opinion, this roller coaster gives us a great series of emotions! At this point, it's not about the money, it's about the experience and this roller coaster certainly provides an out-of-this-world experience.

Red Rock Canyon & Grand Canyon

Renting a car to drive miles through the Arizona and Nevada desert is a great idea. The car we rented cost us $115 Canadian per day with unlimited mileage from Enterprise. Grand Canyon was too far for us for the time we had, but if you have time, go there. For our part, we went to Red Rock Canyon. The name says it, the mountains are red and impressive. Change of scenery guaranteed! Start at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center. From there, you can follow several trails to walk through these magnificent mountains.

Other activities not to be missed

For our part, we have not managed to do everything. So here's a list of what's left on our to-do list the next time we return to Las Vegas:

1- The Las Vegas High Roller Wheel

2- The Sphere

3- Take the Go City Pass and do lots of other activities

Tips for a successful vacation:

Book your hotel early

The earlier you are, the lower the prices you’ll get for hotels in Las Vegas. For our part, we stayed at Planet Hollywood directly opposite the Bellagio for $150 Canadian per night including fees. Don't be wrong, perhaps during your research you will find that the prices are not expensive, but pay special attention to the fees charged by the hotels upon your arrival otherwise you will be in for a happy surprise!

Make a budget for playing at the Casino

If you are like us, you will tell yourself that this is not necessary. But like us, you will regret not having set aside a budget to play at the casinos. There is an atmosphere in the casinos and you get carried away quickly. We have to admit that it is a great experience to play at the casino in the evening or even very early in the morning. No matter the time, there are always a lot of people and it's hard to resist putting a few dollars into a machine. If you're planning to go to Vegas, don't bury your head in the sand... you'll be playing at the Casino, believe us! And this even… straight out of your plane haha!

Have money ready for… everything!

Everything is expensive in Las Vegas. Our morning coffee cost us $7 American every morning and it wasn't Starbucks. Breakfasts are also not included in the hotels so you must plan for lunch, dinner and supper. If you're lucky like us, maybe you'll win enough money at the casino to pay for your meals. But if I were you, I wouldn't just rely on that...

Take the privilege card from your hotel and why not from others!

In casinos, you can go to the service counter and get the privilege card. This card gives you $10 worth of free games. This is the case for several Casinos. If you have some time to kill, why not shop around and try to win some cash with all those free credits!

Our 2 favorite inexpensive restaurants

  • #1 - Dave's Hot Chicken

Located just after the Paris hotel, this little restaurant offers an incredible chicken burger!

  • #2 - In-N-Out Burger

A friend told us to go without fail, which we did. We're not the only ones who were told to go because it was crazy! We have to admit that for a burger, it was really excellent. Nice good, not expensive!

Head full of memories in just 3 days

We went to Las Vegas for only 3 days. Is it sufficient? Yes. On the other hand, having had a larger budget, we would have stayed 1 or 2 days longer. There is so much to do! But honestly, 3 days is enough to have a good tour and get our money's worth. Are we going to go back? Certainly!
